About this Dish

A grilled beef patty topped with melted cheese, stacked high in a soft bun.

History & Origin

The hamburger's exact American origin is disputed among several diners and fairs in the early 1900s, but by mid-century it had become the defining symbol of American fast food.

IngredientsServes 4
🥩Ground beef (80/20 blend), 500g
🧀American cheese slices, 4 slices
🍞Brioche burger buns, 4
🧅Yellow onion, 1 medium thinly sliced
🥬Iceberg lettuce, 4 large leaves
🍅Tomato, 1 large sliced
🥒Dill pickles, 8 slices
🧴Yellow mustard, 2 tablespoons
🍶Ketchup, 3 tablespoons
🧂Salt and black pepper, to taste
Method
1
Divide the ground beef into 4 equal portions and gently shape them into patties about 1cm wider than your buns — they will shrink as they cook. Season both sides generously with salt and black pepper, then press a small indent in the center of each patty with your thumb to prevent them from puffing up.
2
Heat a cast iron skillet or outdoor grill over high heat until very hot. Cook the patties for about 3-4 minutes on the first side without pressing them down — you want a good sear and crust to form.
3
Flip each patty once and immediately place a slice of American cheese on top. Cook for another 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted and the burger is cooked through. Remove from heat and let rest for a minute.
4
While the patties rest, lightly toast the cut sides of the brioche buns in the same pan or on the grill for about 1 minute until golden. This stops the bun from getting soggy and adds great flavor.
5
Spread ketchup on the bottom bun and mustard on the top bun. Stack your burger starting with the bottom bun, then lettuce, tomato slices, the cheesy patty, pickles, onion, and finally the top bun. Serve immediately while the cheese is still melted and gooey.
