About this Dish

Nepal's beloved steamed dumplings, filled with spiced meat or vegetables.

History & Origin

Momo arrived in Nepal via Tibetan traders and became a nationwide obsession, now sold everywhere from street carts to fine restaurants, served with tangy achar dipping sauce.

IngredientsServes 2
🌾All-purpose flour, 2 cups
💧Warm water, ¾ cup
🥩Ground chicken or buffalo meat, 500g
🧅White onion, 1 large finely chopped
🧄Garlic cloves, 4 minced
🫚Vegetable oil, 2 tablespoons
🌿Fresh coriander, a small handful finely chopped
🧂Salt, 1 teaspoon
🌶️Green chilli, 1 finely chopped
🫙Garam masala, 1 teaspoon
Method
1
Mix the flour with a pinch of salt and slowly add warm water, kneading until you get a smooth, firm dough. Cover with a damp cloth and rest for 30 minutes.
2
In a bowl, combine the ground meat with onion, garlic, green chilli, coriander, garam masala, oil, and salt. Mix well with your hands until everything is evenly combined.
3
Pinch off small balls of dough and roll each one into a thin circle about 8cm wide, keeping the edges thinner than the centre.
4
Place a heaped teaspoon of filling in the centre of each wrapper. Fold and pleat the edges together, pinching and twisting them to seal tightly into a crescent or round pouch shape.
5
Arrange the momos in a lightly oiled steamer basket, making sure they are not touching each other. Steam over boiling water for 12 to 15 minutes until the wrappers look slightly translucent and the filling is cooked through.
6
Serve hot with a spicy tomato-sesame dipping sauce or a simple tomato chutney blended with dried chillies and garlic.
